Indigenous C-295 Transport Aircraft Achieves Maiden Flight Milestone

India achieved a significant milestone in its defence and aerospace manufacturing journey as the first domestically produced Airbus C-295 military transport aircraft successfully completed its maiden test flight from the Tata-Airbus Final Assembly Line (FAL) in Vadodara, Gujarat. The achievement marks a major boost to the country’s “Make in India” initiative and its efforts to strengthen indigenous defence production.

The aircraft has been manufactured by Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) in partnership with Airbus. The successful flight is a crucial step in the post-production testing process and paves the way for the aircraft’s induction into the Indian Air Force (IAF) later this year.

The C-295 programme is part of a landmark agreement signed in 2021 under which India will acquire 56 aircraft. While the first 16 aircraft were delivered in flyaway condition from Spain, the remaining 40 are being manufactured in India at the Vadodara facility.

Airbus Defence described the maiden flight as a milestone for Indian aviation and defence. The Indian Air Force also congratulated the teams involved in the successful flight test, highlighting the growing capabilities of India’s aerospace manufacturing ecosystem.

The C-295 is a versatile tactical transport aircraft capable of carrying troops, cargo, and conducting humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and special operations missions. It is expected to replace the ageing Avro fleet of the Indian Air Force and significantly enhance the country’s airlift capabilities.

The successful test flight underscores India’s progress towards self-reliance in defence manufacturing and is expected to create new opportunities for domestic suppliers, technology development, and employment in the aerospace sector.
