Glaw Lake Becomes India’s 101st Ramsar Site, Marking a Milestone for Arunachal Pradesh
In a landmark achievement for India’s environmental conservation efforts, Glaw Lake in Arunachal Pradesh has been designated as the country’s 101st Ramsar Site under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. This recognition also makes it the first wetland in Arunachal Pradesh to receive the prestigious international status.
The Ramsar Convention is a global treaty dedicated to the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands. Sites included in the Ramsar List are recognized for their ecological importance, biodiversity, and role in supporting wildlife and local communities.
Located amid the pristine landscapes of Arunachal Pradesh, Glaw Lake is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna, including several migratory bird species and unique wetland ecosystems. The Ramsar designation highlights the lake’s significance as a vital habitat for biodiversity while encouraging long-term conservation and sustainable management.
With the inclusion of Glaw Lake, India now has 101 wetlands of international importance, reinforcing the country’s commitment to protecting its natural heritage and promoting ecological sustainability.
The recognition is expected to strengthen conservation initiatives, boost eco-tourism opportunities, and raise awareness about the importance of preserving wetlands for future generations.
Glaw Lake’s inclusion in the Ramsar List is a significant step towards safeguarding one of Northeast India’s valuable natural ecosystems, ensuring its ecological richness is preserved for generations to come.
