Travellers across India can now make better use of their airport waiting time, with the Airports Authority of India’s (AAI) Flybrary initiative expanding to 68 airports across the country. The initiative allows passengers to pick up books for free, read them while waiting or during their journey, and return them at participating airports.

Flybrary is designed as an open, self-service library within airport terminals. Passengers can choose a book from the available collection and carry it along on their flight. At participating destinations, the book can be returned to another Flybrary shelf, allowing it to reach another reader.

The initiative was first introduced at Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar in early 2025, in collaboration with the Bakul Foundation and AAI. What began as a pilot project has since expanded across airports in different parts of the country.

The concept is simple: pick a book, read it, and pass it on. Travellers can also contribute to the initiative by donating books at participating locations.

The expansion is part of efforts to make airports more passenger-friendly and transform waiting time into a more meaningful experience. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu has also highlighted Flybrary as an initiative that helps turn idle travel time into an opportunity for reading, learning and leisure.

With Flybrary now available at 68 airports, passengers have a new reason to swap endless scrolling for a few pages of a good book before their next flight.
