Nepal Flood Death Toll Exceeds 950 as Rescuers Battle Mud to Reach Trapped Workers
The death toll from the catastrophic flash floods and ice-rock avalanches along the Nepal-Tibet border has officially crossed 950, with over 4,400 people still unaccounted for. Rescue operations remain severely constrained as emergency personnel struggle through thick mud and debris to reach the worst-hit areas.
A critical focus of the ongoing rescue mission centers on underground hydropower project tunnels in the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts. Power sector representatives report that roughly 500 workers are believed to be trapped inside these mud-choked tunnels, where specialized teams are slowly recovering victims.
The disaster has drawn a swift international response to support local authorities. Singapore is deploying a specialized Disaster Victim Identification team alongside humanitarian aid, joining countries like India, China, the UAE, and Australia in sending rescue personnel, relief supplies, and forensic experts.
Amid the crisis, foreign ministries report that approximately 400 foreign nationals are among the missing. However, safe evacuations are progressing for others, highlighted by a group of 29 rescued tourists from Tamil Nadu arriving safely in New Delhi and several regional workers successfully returning home to their families.
The human cost of the disaster continues to unfold as heartbroken families travel across districts to search for missing relatives among the victims. Due to the sheer volume of unidentified remains, authorities have initiated mass burials while forensic teams work diligently to provide closure to grieving families.
