Woman Assaulted Inside Sleeper Bus in New Delhi; Two Arrested
A shocking incident inside a sleeper bus in New Delhi has raised fresh concerns about women’s safety in the capital city.
Police said the incident took place on the night of May 11 in the Saraswati Vihar–Rani Bagh area. The woman was returning home from work when she approached a sleeper bus near the B-Block bus stand.
According to investigators, the bus driver and conductor allegedly assaulted the woman inside the vehicle. Police arrested both suspects soon after receiving the complaint.
Delhi Police registered an FIR on May 12 under Sections 64(1) (rape), 70(1) (gang rape), and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Officers also seized the bus for forensic examination and further investigation. Doctors conducted the survivor’s medical examination shortly after the complaint.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Vikram Singh denied reports claiming the bus moved across several parts of the city during the incident. He said senior officers reached the location quickly after receiving information about the case.
The incident triggered strong reactions from political leaders and citizens across Delhi. Many people demanded stricter safety measures for women using public transport, especially during late-night travel.
The case has once again highlighted concerns about passenger security in commercial vehicles. Experts and activists continue to call for better surveillance, stronger background checks for transport staff, and faster emergency response systems.
Police are continuing the investigation and collecting additional evidence related to the case.
