Sunita Williams Bids Farewell to NASA After 27 Years of Pioneering Spaceflight
After nearly three decades of redefining the limits of human endurance and exploration, NASA astronaut Sunita Williams has officially retired, bringing to a close one of the most inspiring careers in modern space history. Her contributions outside the spacecraft are equally historic. Williams completed nine spacewalks, accumulating more than 62 hours outside the ISS—the highest total achieved by a woman. She also etched her name into popular culture by becoming the first person to run a marathon in space, completing the Boston Marathon aboard the ISS while orbiting Earth at extraordinary speed.

Sunita Williams first traveled to space in 2006 aboard Space Shuttle Discovery, a mission that introduced the world to her calm presence and operational excellence. She later went on to serve as commander of the International Space Station during Expedition 33, becoming one of the few astronauts entrusted with leading humanity’s most ambitious orbital laboratory.
Her most recent assignment, spanning 2024–2025, saw her return to space aboard Boeing’s Starliner and SpaceX Crew-9 missions. During this period, she commanded Expedition 72, once again playing a central role in scientific research, station operations, and international collaboration in low-Earth orbit.
Beyond Spacewalks and Missions
Williams’ legacy extends far beyond her time in orbit. On the ground, she contributed extensively to astronaut training programs, mission planning, and operational coordination, including assignments in Russia that strengthened international space cooperation. She was also involved in preparing the next generation of astronauts for future deep-space missions, including NASA’s long-term ambitions for lunar exploration.
Before joining NASA, Williams built an accomplished career in the U.S. Navy, logging over 4,000 flight hours across helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft—experience that would later prove invaluable in spaceflight operations.
