Sikkim Becomes India’s First Fully Literate State Under ULLAS Initiative

Gangtok, May 27, 2026: In a landmark achievement for education and adult literacy, Sikkim has been officially declared a fully literate state under the ULLAS (Understanding Lifelong Learning for All in Society) initiative, also known as the Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram.

The declaration was made by Prem Singh Tamang in the august presence of Droupadi Murmu and Om Prakash Mathur during a special ceremony held at the state capital.

The achievement marks a significant milestone in Sikkim’s educational journey, reflecting the state’s sustained efforts to promote literacy, lifelong learning, and inclusive education. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang emphasized that the accomplishment was the result of collective efforts by educators, volunteers, government departments, and local communities.

The recognition as a fully literate state is expected to strengthen Sikkim’s position as a model for educational excellence and inspire similar initiatives across the country. The achievement aligns with India’s broader vision of creating an inclusive, educated, and empowered society.

The event witnessed the participation of senior government officials, educationists, community leaders, and beneficiaries of the literacy program, celebrating a milestone that underscores the power of education in nation-building.
