Hindi Journalism Day Marks 200 Years of ‘Udant Martand’ Legacy

New Delhi, May 30, 2026: Hindi Journalism Day is being observed across the country with special significance this year as India commemorates the 200th anniversary of ‘Udant Martand’, the nation’s first Hindi newspaper. Published on May 30, 1826, from Kolkata, Udant Martand was founded by journalist and scholar Pandit Jugal Kishore Shukla. The newspaper laid the foundation for Hindi-language journalism in India and played a pioneering role in making news accessible to Hindi-speaking readers.
