Writers from Karnataka Chosen for Kerala Literature Festival
Karnataka’s literary community has reason to celebrate as three of its prominent writers have been invited to participate in the upcoming Kerala Literature Festival (KLF), scheduled to begin in Kozhikode on January 22. The selection places a spotlight on voices that have shaped contemporary Indian writing, including a notable talent from the hills of Kodagu.
Among the chosen authors is Deepa Bhasthi, a writer and translator from Madikeri, whose work has been increasingly recognized on national and international platforms. Bhasthi’s nuanced translations and original writing have earned her a strong readership, and her presence at KLF highlights the growing influence of writers from smaller towns and cultural hinterlands.
She will be joined by Banu Mushtaq, whose acclaimed short-story collection Heart Lamp recently gained global visibility after its English translation won the International Booker Prize. Mushtaq’s writing, deeply rooted in human relationships and socio-cultural complexities, has placed Karnataka firmly on the global literary map.
Completing the trio is celebrated novelist and playwright Vivek Shanbhag, known for his crisp storytelling and explorations of middle-class life. His works continue to inspire new generations of Kannada writers and remain a staple in contemporary Indian literature discussions.
Organisers of the Kerala Literature Festival noted that this year’s edition will feature authors from several countries, making it one of the most diverse literary gatherings in the region. The inclusion of these three writers from Karnataka underscores the state’s enduring contribution to India’s literary landscape.
As Kozhikode prepares to host readers, thinkers, and writers from around the world, Karnataka’s literary representatives are set to bring their distinct voices and the stories of their land to one of the country’s most anticipated cultural events.
