The creative mind behind the acclaimed ‘Monk Series’ discusses blending high-stakesespionage with the serene philosophy of the Himalayas.

About the Author
Akshay Shroff is a renowned Indian author globally recognized for his critically and
commercially acclaimed Monk Series. His writing uniquely blends intense espionage with
profound spirituality and action, exploring themes of duty, transformation, and resilience. His
debut novel, The Monk, became an instant national bestseller and established his international
footprint with its Croatian edition, Redovnik. He successfully continued the gripping saga with
The Monk Returns. His latest release, The Game Changer Monk, brings an exciting new
dimension to the series, further cementing his reputation as an award-winning master of the
geopolitical thriller.

TLT: Your ‘Monk Series’ uniquely blends spirituality with espionage! So, what inspired
you to create a protagonist who exists between these two contrasting worlds?
Akshay Shroff: In my debut novel The Monk, the protagonist sets out to dismantle the roots of
terrorism that had become rampant in India. He penetrates Pakistan, the instigators of terror,
wins the confidence of their Army and ISI and then destroys the entire terror network as well as
their defense establishment. However, in the process, several innocents lose their life. Guilt-
ridden and remorseful, he renounces the world, dons saffron and heads off to the Himalayas to
seek pardon of the gods.
Given the menace of terrorism elsewhere in the world, POTUS sends a CIA agent to locate the
protagonist and bring him to the White House, where he is asked to destroy the terror networks
of IS in Syria. It’s the repeat of his Pakistan adventure and hence back to the MindRolling
Monastery in Dehradun. He practices Buddhism, meditation and Yoga. But, that too is short
lived when he is entrusted with the responsibility of unraveling the mystery of COVID-19. Hence,
he is back in Espionage, where his spiritual lifestyle plays an important role in taking his task to
its logical conclusion. It’s merely a coincidence that although the protagonist has adopted a life of penance, he is called back in the same situations again and again. Although, the protagonist in all the 3 books
is same and has become a monk, all the 3 stories are different and stand alone. One doesn’t
have to read the books in a serial order.
“Although the protagonist in all the 3 books is the same and has become a monk, all the 3
stories are different and stand alone. One doesn’t have to read the books in a serial order.”

TLT: With ‘The Game Changer Monk’ how has your central character evolved when
compared to ‘The Monk’ as well as ‘The Monk Returns’?
Akshay Shroff: After destroying the IS network in Syria, the protagonist goes to the
MindRolling Monastery in Dehradun, where he practices Buddhism, Yoga and Meditation. In the
first two novels, he acts purely based on his training in the Police Department. However, in The
Game-changer Monk his spiritual lifestyle plays an important role in overcoming the challenges
he faces in China and USA.

TLT: The idea of a special agent turning monk is fascinating. What does this dual identity
allow you to explore that a conventional spy story cannot?
Akshay Shroff: A conventional spy story relies solely on the training of a man in espionage.
Whereas in The Game-changer Monk the protagonist utilises not only his training as a former
Police officer but also the Yoga and meditation that he practices at the Buddhist monastery.

TLT: Your narrative dives deep into terrorism, intelligence networks, and political deceit.
How do you balance the realism along with storytelling without compromising either?
Akshay Shroff: No compromise is required because the restlessness of the protagonist in
challenging global conspiracies helps him to overcome the situations due to his spiritual
instincts.

TLT: Spirituality plays a significant role in your series. How do philosophical undertones
enhance the tension and stakes of an espionage thriller?
Akshay Shroff: In the challenging and difficult circumstances that the protagonist encounters,
the philosophy of Aerial Yoga and meditation come in good stead while tackling the tensions of
the espionage activity.

TLT: The protagonist is constantly torn between duty and inner peace. Do you see this
conflict as symbolic of a larger human struggle?
Akshay Shroff: It’s indeed a struggle from within his self, duty and inner peace. But, the
readers have loved it immensely since they can relate to a similar struggle in their own lives.

TLT: What kind of research goes into crafting the world of intelligence agencies and
counter-terrorism operations in your books?
Akshay Shroff: A lot of research is involved in finding out the way counterterrorism operations
evolve and the functioning of the intelligence agencies. Thanks to Google!

TLT: The Himalayan monastery setting offers a stark contrast to global conflict zones.
How important is this contrast in shaping the emotional depth of the story?
Akshay Shroff: When we read any contemporary espionage thrillers we come across only
strategy and action, even violence. But the Himalayan monastery offers a spiritual and peaceful
way to combat the obstacles faced by the agent and hence lends a different perspective for the
way ahead. That actually shapes the emotional depth of the story.
“The Himalayan monastery offers a spiritual and peaceful way to combat the obstacles faced
by the agent… That actually shapes the emotional depth of the story.”

TLT: In “The Game Changer Monk” secrets and betrayals are central themes. What draws
you to exploring trust and deception in such intense environments?
Akshay Shroff: Mainly his own inner struggles and ways in which sinister entities operate helps
in the exploration.

TLT: What challenges did you face while writing this instalment, especially in maintaining
freshness in an ongoing series?
Akshay Shroff: To be honest, I didn’t face any challenges whatsoever. Words flowed
spontaneously as the story progressed.

TLT: Looking ahead, how do you see the ‘Monk Series’ evolving? Will the balance
between spirituality and espionage shift further in future narratives?
Akshay Shroff: In my next novel too the spirituality will continue to provide the backbone
required in negotiating the hurdles that the protagonist would face.
