IIT Bombay receives an anonymous $18.6 million donation for green energy research.
The prestigious institute announced on Thursday that an alumnus has donated USD 18.6 million to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay for the creation of a Green Energy and Sustainability Research Hub.
The IIT B chose not to reveal the alumni’ identity, citing his desire to maintain his anonymity.
By making this contribution, the institute will clarify its position in the fight against the climate problem. The hub will be situated in a cutting-edge academic structure on the IIT Bombay campus in the Powai district, and its focus will extend to critically essential sectors, according to a statement from the university.
According to the statement, the areas of attention include assessing climate risks and creating practical mitigation plans, preparing for climate change, and conducting thorough environmental monitoring.
Additionally, the hub aims to promote the use of energy-efficient technologies and renewable energy sources.
According to the statement, it will boost research in a number of crucial fields, including as battery technology, solar photovoltaics, biofuels, clean-air science, flood forecasts, and carbon capture, among others.
According to the statement, the research center will foster strategic partnerships with leading universities and businesses throughout the world and provide educational training specific to the industry.
The creation of this centre demonstrates our commitment to addressing climate concerns through cutting-edge research, encouraging interdisciplinary collaborations, and supporting entrepreneurial endeavors, according to Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri, Director of IIT Bombay. According to him, the Green Energy and Sustainability Research Hub is proof of the effect that group efforts may have on establishing a sustainable future.
“This is a rare occurrence in Indian academia that a philanthropist wishes to stay anonymous,” Mr Chaudhari added.
