Deadly Quakes Strike Venezuela, Rescue Efforts Underway in Capital

Two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela on Wednesday, causing widespread destruction in and around the capital city of Caracas. Several buildings collapsed, hundreds were injured, and rescue teams worked through the night searching for survivors trapped beneath the rubble.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), a magnitude 7.2 earthquake was followed less than a minute later by a stronger magnitude 7.5 tremor. The epicenter was located west of Caracas along Venezuela’s Caribbean coast.

Officials reported at least 32 deaths and more than 700 injuries, although authorities fear the toll could rise as rescue operations continue. Emergency crews, medical personnel, and volunteers have been deployed across affected areas to assist victims and assess structural damage.

The earthquakes triggered panic throughout Caracas, with residents rushing out of homes, offices, and public buildings as walls cracked and debris fell onto streets. Several neighborhoods experienced significant damage, while power outages and communication disruptions complicated rescue efforts.

The Venezuelan government has declared a state of emergency and temporarily suspended classes nationwide. Authorities also closed the country’s main international airport after it sustained damage during the tremors. International leaders have expressed solidarity and offered assistance as Venezuela begins recovery efforts.

Rescue operations remain ongoing as officials continue to evaluate the full extent of the disaster and search for those still missing.
