India Shifts from Manufacturing Base to Innovation-Led MedTech Powerhouse
India’s medical technology sector is undergoing a significant transformation, evolving from a cost-driven manufacturing base into an innovation-led industry with global ambitions. According to Himanshu Baid, Managing Director of Poly Medicure, the country is increasingly positioning itself as a key player in the international MedTech landscape through advancements in research, technology, and manufacturing capabilities.
Baid highlighted that India’s growing ecosystem, supported by government initiatives and increasing investments in healthcare infrastructure, is enabling domestic companies to develop world-class medical devices and solutions. He noted that the sector is no longer competing solely on affordability but is also emphasizing quality, innovation, and compliance with global standards.
The industry is witnessing rising demand for indigenous medical technologies, backed by policies aimed at boosting local manufacturing and reducing import dependence. Indian MedTech firms are also expanding their footprint in overseas markets, exporting products to numerous countries and strengthening the nation’s reputation as a reliable healthcare manufacturing destination.
With increasing focus on research and development, digital health solutions, and advanced medical devices, experts believe India is well-positioned to become a major global MedTech hub. Baid emphasized that sustained innovation and collaboration between industry, academia, and policymakers will be crucial in driving the sector’s next phase of growth.
