Charlie Watts, the drummer for the Rolling Stones, will auction off his rare book collection.

Charlie Watts is well known as the drummer for the Rolling Stones, but few people are aware of his passion for reading and extensive library. And now, around two years after his passing, Watts’ varied book collection is going up for auction, according to the BBC.
Numerous first edition books that are uncommon can be found in Watts’ library. It includes a first edition signed copy of F Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby,” which is anticipated to fetch between £200,000 and £300,000.

The book was initially dedicated to MGM screenwriter Harold Goldman. “ForHarold Goldman, the original ‘Gatsby’ of this story, with thanks for allowing me to reveal these secrets of his past,” is written inscribed in the book.

The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle, in its first edition and rare copy, as well as first editions and rare works by James Joyce, Agatha Christie, and PG Wodehouse are among the other highlights of Watts’ book collection that will be auctioned off.

The BBC quotes Watts’ biographer Paul Sexton as saying, “He valued his time at home and he would read on the road, so literature was a very important part of his make-up,” in reference to Watts’ love of books and literature. I don’t believe he bought them with the intention of increasing their value; rather, I believe he did it because finding original first editions of these great books gave him a tremendous deal of pleasure.

Apart from Watts’ interesting collection of books, his jazz memorabilia are also up for auction.
Christie’s will host the auction on September 28-29, 2023.
