William Dalrymple’s ‘The Anarchy’ to be adapted into a series
The 2019 book “The Anarchy” by acclaimed historian William Dalrymple will soon be turned into a television series. ‘An international co-production between Wiip and Roy Kapur Films to be developed throughout the U.S., U.K., and India,’ according to Variety.
In “The Anarchy,” Dalrymple describes the fall of the Mughal Empire, one of the most spectacular empires ever, and how the British East India Company took its place. The latter was a distant, little office in London that was home to an unsafely unregulated private corporation.
The book “The Anarchy” was previously listed among the top 10 books that former US President Barack Obama would suggest, and it was also a 2019 Baillie Gifford Prize nominee. ‘The Anarchy’ will be adapted for the big screen by award-winning screenwriter Jeremy Brock. Brock reportedly told Variety “I’m incredibly excited to be able to adapt William Dalrymple’s all-encompassing history of India under the rise of the world’s first global commercial empire. ‘The Anarchy’ is packed with amazing characters, the highest possible stakes and a contemporary resonance that sees the weaponization of profit on a level that boggles the mind. Dalrymple’s brilliant book has the scale of ‘Game of Thrones,’ the internecine plotting of ‘Succession’ and a true-life intensity that begs to be dramatized.”
Paul Lee, Siddharth Roy Kapur, and Naz Haider are the project’s executive producers, according to the press release. According to IANS, Dalrymple would act as a creative consultant.
“We are delighted to announce that we have brought on board the acclaimed BAFTA award winning screenwriter Jeremy Brock to adapt William Dalrymple’s worldwide bestseller “The Anarchy” into a premium series,” Siddharth Roy Kapur remarked when discussing the development.
“Jeremy’s expertise in crafting intricate character-driven narratives that are deeply rooted in history and setting them against a huge canvas makes him the perfect collaborator for this project. We look forward to creating a globally-relevant series that will appeal to audiences across geographies, languages and cultures.”
