International Booker Prize 2026 Shortlist Highlights Powerful Voices from Around the World

The announcement of the 2026 International Booker Prize shortlist once again demonstrates the profound impact of storytelling across languages and cultures.

This year’s selection features six outstanding works of fiction from across the globe, including The Director by Daniel Kehlmann, The Witch by Marie NDiaye, and Taiwan Travelogue by Yang Shuang-zi. These books not only offer deeply personal narratives that bring characters to life, but also present richly detailed worlds filled with diverse people, settings, and experiences.

The remaining shortlisted titles, The Nights Are Quiet in Tehran by Shida Bazyar, She Who Remains by Rene Karabash, and On Earth As It Is Beneath by Ana Paula Maia, each provide unique perspectives on themes such as identity, history, and survival.

What stands out this year is the wide emotional range of the works. Some stories explore major historical and political issues, while others are quiet and introspective, communicating meaning in subtle, almost wordless ways. Despite their differences, all leave a lasting impression. The judges have described the shortlist as “humane” and “insightful,” a sentiment clearly reflected in the chosen works.

Marking ten years since the prize adopted its current format, the International Booker Prize continues to successfully connect international authors with English-speaking readers, while maintaining the authenticity and emotional depth of the original texts.

The winner will be revealed on May 19, with the £50,000 prize shared equally between the author and translator, recognizing translation as both a creative art and a technical craft.
