Basic Polysomnography | Book Review | Dr. Tripat Deep Singh | The Literature Today

Firstly, it’s very much obligatory to understand the subject matter on which this review has been carried out, well many of us are alien to the term, “Polysomnography” so let me start this review by defining this term!

Polysomnography is also called a sleep study, and is a test used to diagnose sleep disorders. Polysomnography records your brain waves, the oxygen level in your blood, heart rate and breathing, as well as eye and leg movements during the study.

The book, “Basic Polysomnography” by Author Dr. Tripat Deep Singh is actually an attempt to study the tendency of the human brain; the way our brain performs when we are asleep and how our sleep becomes the cause of the hypertension which we face. The Author had made a very nice effort to explain some very basic and vital biological issues like how our sleeping pattern directly effects our breathing, heart rate, and the blood pressure in our body.

The Author, Dr. Tripat Deep Singh is currently Clinical Manager Sleep Healthcare ASEAN Philips Electronics Singapore. In his current role he trains Doctors, Nurses and technicians in the field of Sleep Medicine and Sleep Technology in ASEAN region and Pakistan. He graduated with MBBS from Govt. Medical College Patiala, Punjab, India in 2003. He obtained his Post-graduate degree in Physiology from Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute University of Delhi, Delhi, India.

In 2009 where he also got trained in the field of Sleep medicine. He specializes in Sleep Medicine as International Sleep Specialist (World Sleep Federation program) and Sleep Technology as Registered Polysomnography Technologist (RPSGT) & Registered Sleep Technologist (RST). He is a regular faculty for National Sleep Medicine Course and National Sleep Technology Course in India. He is editor of newsletter for Philips (Sleep Matters) and Indian Society for Sleep Research (Sleep Watching India).

He also publishes literature updates in Sleep Medicine “Sleep Update India” two times in a year for ISSR. He is Associate Editor of American Academy of Sleep Technology (AAST) Book “Fundamentals of Sleep Technology”, which is considered must read in the field of Sleep technology. He is on the Editorial board of “Sleep and Vigilance” Journal and Journal of Neurology Indonesian Neurology Society. He was awarded Medal of Honor in 2019 by Ministry of Health Vietnam for his contributions for developing Sleep Medicine and Sleep Technology in Vietnam.

He was Assistant Professor in Medical College, Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences, and taught Medical Physiology to Medical and Nursing students. He was in charge of Sleep lab at Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences before joining Philips in the current role. He is frequent speaker at various courses and workshops in ASEAN region, India, Korea and Pakistan.

In this book, Basic Polysomnography, the Author had followed a very simple and yet an impactful stratagem to explain the subject of “Polysomnography” even to the beginners! This book is Author’s approach to score the “Sleeping” and all the other associated events related to the sleeping of a person!

This book is not for teaching everything about Polysomnography but it is about an Algorithmic Approach to sleep scoring and associated events. In this book, Expert scorers will find a refreshing new approach to Scoring Sleep and associated events and beginners in the field of Sleep technology will find a guided and methodical approach to learn about Scoring Sleep and associated events.

Well, the readers are most certainly going to learn a lot from this book and from the experience of the Author! The 11 Reading Worthy Chapters in this book are written in such an extra-ordinary manner than even as a beginner you are bound to learn each of those subject matters, which you need to know about our sleep and all those factors or events which are related to the human sleeping pattern!

Very much the introduction of the book the Author had not only mentioned some exciting and insightful topics like Sleep Staging, Arousal Scoring, Respiratory Event Scoring, Movement Event Scoring and Cardiac Event Scoring but has also explained the manner in which the readers, specially the beginners are supposed to carry forward the book with the further chapters.

If we will study the complete subject matter presented by the Author in this book, then we will conclude that of course the Book Title is very apt and suitable! Moreover, a book like “Basic Polysomnography” deserves a chance by the readers since as readers most of us don’t even have the very basic knowledge of such vital biological functions taking place in our body, which probably affects us at every moment of our lives with each breath that we take. So, for the sake of “Awareness” this book is a Must Pick!
