In Zanzibar, Tanzania, India will establish its own IIT, with intentions to begin offering courses there in October 2023.


On July 5, 2023, the Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India, IIT Madras, and Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (MoEVT), Zanzibar, Tanzania, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish an IIT Madras campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) will open its first campus outside of India in Zanzibar, Tanzania. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of the IIT Madras campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania was signed between the Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India, IIT Madras, and Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (MoEVT) Zanzibar, Tanzan.

Hussein Ali Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar, and S. Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs of India, were present when the MoU was signed. India’s commitment to the Global South is reflected in this historic move, S Jaishankar claimed in a tweet on Thursday.
“Witnessed the signing of the agreement on setting up the IIT Madras Zanzibar campus,” he wrote.
